Thoughts on a disastrous studio

There are no pictures for this blog post. I wouldn't dare stand the humiliation. lol
Seriously, has your studio gotten out of control? Well my studio has and for
various reasons.

My studio was the place to go and relax, my own space. It now belongs to the
things I supposedly need for my craft. I have a work table that I haven't seen the
bottom of in three months! I have had to move into other rooms to work.

If I was upset, all I needed to do was come into my studio and I would be calm.
Not so these days. It's such a mess I can no longer focus. I used to keep the door open
to my studio, now I close it.

I could tell you all the good reasons why it became a disaster, but they all seem like excuses to me
right now. Whether they are legit, does not matter, the end result is the same.

So for the last few weeks I have been feeling sorry for myself and now I'm just plain sick of that too.

What should I do? Well truthfully I don't know where to begin. I would love to move everything
out of here and then just bring back in what I really need, right now. The problem with that idea is
storage of those items not brought back in. Perish the thought I would get rid of something.
One never knows when it might become important to a piece. lol although if the room is so bad,
and I cannot create then there will not be an important piece.

This is not the type of blog post where I come up with a happy solution and you all see my
wonderful studio with everything in it's place.

Actually I'm posting my thoughts in hopes that someone has some ideas for me?
I have lots of storage cabinets. Also I am physically challenged so a mass clean-up
is out of the question.

A penny for your thoughts, better yet I will give you real dollars to help me clean this up. lol

Yesterday a friend of mine and I went out to breakfast. We both used to live in Lakewood, Ohio so we thought it would be fun to have breakfast at The Place to Be. It is a tiny restaurant, off a main street in Lakewood. If you have lived in Lakewood for awhile, you know the place. It is not a well known restaurant, unless you are a local. Great breakfast, omelets etc... There still are places where you can eat
for under ten dollars.

There is a park not to far from there that looks out over Lake Erie. I used to go there several times a week. I moved out to the country so it's not that close anymore. Of course I didn't bring my camera.
So I was forced to take pics with my IPhone. Someone had built a tee-pee out of driftwood! You cannot tell from the picture, but it stands at least 12 ft. Hopefully this weekend I can get closer and remember my camera.

Dyeing with Fruit

Muslin dyed with blueberries

1. Make sure the muslin is washed before dyeing.
2. Put a pint of blueberries and 3 cups of water on stove and bring to boil. Remove blueberries.
3. I gathered up the muslin and here and there tied string on so the color would not be even.
4. Stir blueberries and shut off heat when it has reached a boil. Put muslin in making sure to soak
the entire cloth. I let mine sit for an hour, the longer it sits the more intense the color.
5. Take the dyed piece out of the water and let it dry outside. Leave the string on until the fabric
is nearly dry.
6. When the muslin is dried, cut of string and lay the piece of muslin out to finish drying.
7. When dry heat set fabric with iron. Gently wash and then put in dryer. This will further set the color.

Notes:

Your hands will turn blue.
Never use a pot you are going to cook with to dye fabric.
Be sure to wash separately as dye will fade.
Remove hot cloth with tongs and place in bowl so it does not drip on your floor.

Cleveland Botanical Garden: Orchid Show

The show was beautiful. So many orchids. I wanted to take them all home.
They have a structure called the Glasshouse. It is a rain forest environment. There were
all types of plants and small animals that live in a rain forest. There were birds, butterflies,
a turtle, and others. A wonderful place to take the family.

So I took quite a few photos while I was there. Right now I will show you the orchids.
Pardon me but I forgot to write the names down. I was just so excited taking pictures.

I made these angel wings for a challenge. My friend Deanna on Twitter @killerella is doing a challenge on her blog dizzylittlekingdom.blogspot.com.

Check out her blog for all the other angel wings. They are wonderful!

I had old brocade curtains which I purchased at the Good Will years ago.

They were the ugliest things. There was some sort of shiny finish on them.

I brought them home and washed them in hot water. It took the finish off and the fabric was soft and pliable.

I took an 8and a half by 11 piece of paper folded it in half and drew one wing.

Cut it out and had a lovely pair of wings.

I laid the fabric on two pieces of the brocade and cut the wings out, sewed around the edge leaving an opening for turning the wings. Stuffed them and hand sewed the opening.

I took a vintage earring, cut the back off and stitched it down to the wings.

I used some antique tatting for the hanging loop.

Some beading to the wings would have been nice, but I'm not good with tiny beads, so I left them off.

This morning I decided to brave the weather and step outside for some photos of the storm hitting our area. It is hard to see the blowing snow in the photos but trust me it was quite windy.

When I turned around to go back in, the storm door latch was stuck and I couldn't get in. I had a momentary panic because I was standing there without a winter coat on, gloves or any other type of winter protection. I started to bang on the door handle and eventually it loosened enough for me to get in the house.

That was enough for me. No more pictures, I don't care how much more snow we are going to get.

Strawberry Jam

We have a tradition in our family of strawberry picking and then jam making. My children picked strawberries with me when they were young. I think they ate as much as they picked.

Telltale sign, little red faces. My daughter picks them now. My grandson will be old enough to

pick strawberries next year. I can hardly wait to see him out there eating and picking.

My job has always been to make the jam. I make freezer jam. Every year I make enough to

last the winter, or so I think. Every year we run out. There is nothing like opening a jar of jam

in the winter and savoring a taste of summer.

I bought raspberries this weekend and plan to put some in the freezer too. Next year I plan on buying a raspberry and blueberry bush, so I can grow my own.

I always think of flea markets and antiquing during the summer. Well on my trip to Austin, I found a very unique shop called Uncommon Goods. The store was wall to wall antiques and collectibles. They allowed me to take pictures of the shop so I could share them with you. I collect so many things. This time I purchased a vintage straw hat with beautiful lace and rhinestones. This store was the kick-off to a season of flea markets and garage sales. Have you been bitten by the bug?

Lady Bird Johnson's Wildflower Center

Well I had a wonderful time visiting my son in Austin. We went to many great restaurants during the week. Saturday morning we went to the Wildflower Center. My dear son was kind enough to attend and push me around in a wheelchair. The blue bonnets were wonderful.

I am going to try and grow some here, although I'm not sure how successful I will be. The seeds are planted in the fall and then come up in the spring. What I am not sure of is if they can tolerate our freezing temperatures. Has anyone tried growing them in the North?

I would like to try Indian Paintbrush. I do not have a picture of them, but they grow everywhere. They are an orange small flower. Quite beautiful mixed in with the Blue Bonnets.

I really didn't want to come home. Everything was lush and green.

My next blog is about an antique store I visited in Austin.

I am going to be visiting my son in Austin soon, and I can hardly wait. It has been difficult since he left town. We are a small family and this is the first time one of my children has moved away.

I have been packing, unpacking, repacking ordering new clothes and making lists of things I need to take. I haven't been on a plane for many years and with all the new restrictions I am constantly calling the airline to find out what is ok to bring.

One of the first things I plan on doing with my son is have barbeque Texas style.
My son has several restaurants lined up. Yum.

The next place we are going to visit is Lady Byrd Johnson's Wildflower Reservation.
I wonder how Texas wildflowers stack up to Ohio wildflowers. My son is sweet enough to go with me, poor thing.

I will post pictures of their wild flowers when I get back.

Fun Things to do this Winter

Winter can be so long and cabin fever can strike early. Well below is a list of things to do that might help you make it through the winter months.

1. Throw a pot luck party.

2. Read that novel you've been putting off.

3. Buy a sled and feel the wind in your hair as you race down the hill.

4. Gather some children together and have a snowball fight.

5. Make some hot chocolate, adding some Bailey's Irish Cream.

6. Winter is the perfect time for a project. Try something new; bake some bread, painting on

fabric or a new computer program. I always have a project I am saving for the winter

months.

7. Watch an old movie. Go through Hitchcock's movies.

8. Set up a bird feeder outside a window so you can watch the birds. Just be sure to keep

it full of food.

Garage Sales

I have been having fun this summer going to garage sales. The thrill of the hunt, but less violent than actual hunting. Although some people who go to garage sales can be quite aggressive.

Today was an exciting day. I found an Underwood Typewriter. They were asking $25.00, I asked them if they would take $15.00. They agreed. I told her I was an artist and I had intended to use the keys for a project. She said she was at an art show and someone had made earings out of the keys. Very clever. Well, I told her I could not possibly take it apart. The Underwood is in mint condition. She was pleased. Apparently it had belonged to her brother.

When I go to garage sales I know what I'm looking for and what I want to do with an item if I find it. What happens then, I simply cannot use it, cannot cut it up or take it apart. Does this happen to you? I'm curious, how many times have you purchased something in a garage sale, had plans to use it and just could not bring yourself to change it into something else?

WTJ took a shower. This was a difficult one. The thought of getting a book wet, on purpose, was alien to me. Luckily it was a sunny day so WTJ went sun bathing afterward.

FUN THINGS TO DO THIS SUMMER

1. Visit the ocean/lake- take home some sea glass, shells or driftwood
2. Go swimming (buy a kiddy pool if you don't have access to water)
3. Take a nature walk, carry a bag for any objects you find
4. Sit outside, in a lounge chair and read a book (SPF50)
5. Make a batch of ice tea with mint
6. Plant some flowers or herbs in yoour garden or on your windowsill
7. Watch the stars instead of TV
8. Go to a drive-in movie theater- bring pizza
9. Make a pitcher of sangria
10. Run through the sprinkler
11. East dinner outside by candlelight with a tablecloth and cloth napkins
12. Go to your local community concert
13 Go for an old fashioned ride in the country, pack a "shoe box" lunch
14. Go to a Little League game
15. Have ice cream at you local library's Ice Cream Social
16. Pick strawberries and blueberries from a farm

I made up this list because summer was not feeling special this year. So I decided to brainstorm ideas of things to do this summer. Hope something interests you as well.

I just got back from the doctors, turns out my knee is not fractured, it is arthritis that has made it difficult to walk.

The first thing I did was glue the Police Blotter from my community paper in the journal. Always good for a laugh. I then proceeded to the page, drip something here. I took some pink paint and dripped it, following the instructions I shut the book, reopened it to find blobs of color. Looks like an ink test where you are supposed to find something in the blob. I found nothing. Perhaps another time I will see something highly creative. I did find pink paint on my good linen shorts though.

I decided to go get the mail, we have mail huts. My neighbor was there and I asked her what she thought of the weather (she was wearing long sleeves and long pants). It is 86 and humid. She said she never discusses the weather, she hates anything above 70, but is always happy to discuss snow in the winter. I love the people in my neighborhood.
